PECARD

Our Pecard Leather Dressing & Boot/Shoe Oil products are based on a petroleum lubricant similar to Vaseline, with additions of selected waxes including beeswax. It is a dressing which penetrates the leather, allows the fibers to bend and move without chafing and breaking, coats the fibers to inhibit oxidation, and helps maintain a desirable level of moisture in the leather. It is chemically neutral, will not darken leather, but restore it to it's natural-toned color. It carries neither salts or harsh solvents, and does not decompose to form damaging chemicals. Remember, leather is a protean and needs these oils to prevent them from drying out, while providing long term moisturization, lubrication and weatherproofing.

The majority of leather dressings on the market today are based on tallow or neatsfoot oil. Tallow, even kidney fat, contain salts which build up with repeated dressing and attack the leather fibers. These animal fats provide a culture for the growth of bacteria and fungus, and turn rancid, resulting in further attack on the leather. Products that use animal fats include: Mink Oil, Lanolin based products, Neatsfoot Oil, etc.

Here's the email to Pecards:
…I use Antique Pecard Leather Dressing and it works very well and is highly recommended. I have a question as I notice it contains Petroleum Distillates in the Warning. Will this harm the leather over time as some people say not to use products with petroleum distillates on leather? What is the right answer? …

…We are required by law to put that warning on the label. The truth of the matter is that there are many different grades of petroleum distillates. The ones people are referring to are the ones that were used in Neat's-foot oil long ago. They were caustic and harmed the leather and stitching. We only use food grade petroleum which is pH balanced to leather. You can be rest assure that Pecards Leather Dressing won't harm you valuable leather items. I hope this helps.…

…I know for a fact that the Smithsonian uses only pecards on the leather in their care.

John A-G
This is 100% inaccurate and false. The Smithsonian and National Park Service have totally rejected the use of any treatment to leather with any product. This was covered, in depth, in Military Trader articles in 2008.

Jerry Burney
Having been in the leather restoration business for 10 years or so I have tried many products. First off let me say I would not recommend using any leather cream if it is not absolutely needed on a vintage leather item. Easy to put on, impossible to get off. Consider carefully before you do it.
The finest product I know of is Connoly's Hide Food. It is primarily lanolin. Smells like leather, is not sticky, disapears at room temperature and shines nicely. This is used and made by the British for Jaguar and Roll's leather car seats.
For those who are interested..Pecard's is a petroleum wax and is the nastiest goo on the Planet. do NOT put it on vintage leather if you value it. It is made for boots and shoes in wet weather. For this purpose it is fine. It will destroy your leather collectables.

…略…

One thing bothers me about their product..right off they are talking about oils. Oil, particularly petroleum oil is death to leather. Take neatsfoot oil for instance. The oil is very popular for lots of people to put on leather. Do you know what it was developed to do? To break down leather fibers. It was used to soften stiff new shoe leather soles. Since these only last a short while it was a good use. Put it on vintage leather and your precious collectble will soften and come apart. Oil reacts to leather fibers as it would your interlaced fingers on two hands. It will let the fibers slip apart. Leather will absorb most any liquid and I emplore all who plan to "improve" their leather collectable to think long and hard about putting anything on it. Even the product I use is not proven to prevent long term damage and it might even contribute to it. I have neglected to do a 100 year study to find out.

…略…

As far as the Smithsonian..They will not say what they use but they will say they do not use a particular product if you ask them. I called about Pecards and they deny using it and were resentfull of claims that they did use it. Perhaps the Smithsonian once made an order to this Co. That's possible. I have ordered many such products but after use or testing I do not use them.…
