ベイカーもロシアンカーフの再現を始めてた。（参考：トリプルスキンの再現）
フランスの某高級ブランド（どこだろう？）が発注したんだそう。キップ（若い雌牛）を、3種類の樹皮（柳、白樺、オーク）で12ヶ月以上鞣して、ダビン（恐らく羊脂と魚油のブレンド）と白樺油で仕上げている、とのこと。
ベイカーの近所にあるタナー・ベイツというレザーグッズ屋が使えているってことは、某高級ブランド専用革というわけではなさそう。どこかで見たことあるような型押しだから、規格品の金型なのかな？ どうせなら金型を特注して菱目模様にこだわればいいのにね。
One of our very special leathers is Russia Kip produced at our local tannery in East Devon. Kip comes from a young cow, bigger than a calf but smaller than a cow.
In the 70’s Cornish divers salvaged a cargo of Russian leather from a wreck that went down off the coast of Plymouth in 1786.
Our tanners were commissioned by a luxury French brand to create a leather made to the same ancient Russian recipe.
The leather is extraordinary, tanned with 3 different tree barks (willow, birch and oak) and, just like the original, dressed with birch oil.

RUSSIA KIP LEATHER
Making this leather is a slow process taking over 12 months at our tannery in Devon using 3 specific tree barks (Oak from the Lake District, Willow from Somerset and Birch from France) and an ancient technique of dressing with dubbin and birch oil.
The smell is extraordinary and the feel, luxurious. This leather is made for us using an old Russian recipe which came to be known about in the 1970's when a cargo of Russian hides was discovered aboard a shipwreck that has been at the bottom of the ocean just off the coast of Plymouth since 1786. A leaflet explaining the provenance is included with each one.
英国の老舗タンナー、ベイカー社のフルグレインブライドルを使用したワイルドスワンズ新作。
ちなみにこの革は、同ブランドで革の仕入れの担当をする山田氏が、世界最高峰のベーカー社製ブライドルレザーの中でもさらに最高ランクの革がある、という噂を聞きつけ渡英。「こんな猛々しいブライドルは見たことがない！！」と一目惚れした激レア素材。
約1年という、通常10倍もの時間をかけてなめした革は、従来のエイジングの印象を覆すほど美しく成長します。

フルグレインブライドルレザーとは？
簡単にいうと皮の銀面を削らずにロウを染み込ませたブライドルなんですが、これは他じゃまずできません。なぜなら通常は銀面を削らないとロウが染み込まないから。
ただベイカー社の秘伝のレシピにより、革本来の秘密を保持したフルグレインのままブライドルに仕上げられるのだそう。エイジングはひたすら色艶の深みが増す、息を呑む美しさ。こんな財布、他にはまずないと断言します。
鞣しに1年もかけて凄い的なニュアンスでベイカーは紹介されることが多いと思いますが、ピロガロール系のオークバークは結合するのに時間がかかるだけの話で、ホーウィン、新喜、栃木あたりは、ミモザやケブラチョといった早く結合するカテコール系をメインに使っているだけの話だと思うんですよね。（参考：植物タンニンの酸化と耐光性）
The processes for making Horween’s signature leathers like shell cordovan and Chromexcel, a rich and versatile cowhide, can’t be rushed. Shell cordovan comes from the inner membrane of the horse posterior. The horse butts are draped over rods and submerged in “pits,” or low pools filled with Horween’s proprietary vegetable tanning solution made from tree barks, for 30 days. After tanning, the hides are carefully shaved, a process that exposes the outline of the inner membrane, and steeped in a second pit of stronger solution for another 30 days. When they come out, they’re hand-oiled. ホーウィンのコードバンは、薄いタンニンでまず1ヶ月鞣し、シェルを削り出した後、濃いタンニンでもう1ヶ月鞣す。その後オイル入れ、3ヶ月寝かした後、再度削り出しをする。
Unlike the chromexcel leather, it (=cordovan) is then tanned in pits. These are filled with a specific tanning “solutions”. I was surprised to hear that Horween actually makes their own tanning solution, which consists of chestnut and quebracho tree bark as well as resins.

ホーウィンは、カテコール系のケブラチョとピロガロール系のチェスナットのブレンドの模様。
この後、なめし工程に入る。なめしには薬品を使う「クロムなめし」と植物の渋を使う「タンニンなめし」がある。クロムなめしはドラムを使い、5時間もあれば大量になめすことができるが、同社はピットと呼ばれるプール状のタンニン槽で1カ月かけてタンニンなめしを行う。「繊維が緻密なコードバンには、時間をかけてじっくりタンニンを浸透させた方が、経年変化の風合いが出る」と米田氏。第1工場に設置されたピットは40台。1台で100頭分のコードバンが作れるという。

新喜皮革では「ミモザ」の樹皮エキスを用いなめしています。使うほどに味わいがうまれ、経年変化（エイジング）していきます。
栃木レザーでは質の高いブラジル産ミモザのタンニンを使用し、数十年間一度も途切れさせず継ぎ足し続けています。皮は濃度の薄いタンニン槽から段階を経て、濃度の濃いタンニン槽へと約30日間浸け込み鞣し上げられます。
ミモザやケブラチョといった早く結合するカテコール系で1年鞣したらどうなる？という疑問が湧きますが、過剰な結合（鞣し）はダメみたい。
曲げたり引張ったり、皮革に荷重をかけたときに銀面に割れを生じること。皮革表面に鞣剤が過剰に結合したり、紫外線、強酸、アルカリや熱によって革タンパク質が変性したりした場合及び加脂剤の酸化などによって生じやすくなる。
植物タンニン鞣しの工程の一つ。鞣し工程後に革の表面に過剰に付着したタンニンや革中の未結合タンニンを除去すること。底革では鞣し後に水に漬け込んで行うが、ほかの植物タンニン鞣しでは、合成タンニン剤や水洗で処理を行う。この工程を行わないと、表面に付着したタンニンのため、過剰鞣しとなり革が割れたり色が黒ずんだりする。
銀浮きと似た症状でドロウグレインが用いられるが、この場合は真皮層に比べて銀面だけが過剰に鞣され、引きつった状態をいう。
＜追記＞
ホワイトハウスコックスが販売してました。再現を発注したのはエルメスだったようです。鞣し期間12ヶ月と4ヶ月はどちらかが間違っているのでしょう。価格はコードバン並に高いですね。（参考：2012年販売のホーウィンコードバン COIN WALLET は 50,400円）
「ベイカーズ・ロシアンカーフ」は、英国南西部で育てられたカーフを白樺(White Birch)、柳(willow)、樫(Oak)と3種類の樹皮を使用して、約4カ月かけてじっくりとなめしたベジタブルタンニングレザーです。その革の裏面から白樺のオイルをたっぷりと染み込ませてフィニッシングをします。・・・

クロケットによると、アーキビスト（文書管理の専門家）とロシア語通訳の協力の下に2年強かけて実験した。英国産の若いオックスハイド（ステアハイド）を4ヶ月鞣した、とのこと。
Made from young English Ox hides, ‘Russian Grain’ is produced by an old English tannery, who specialise in traditional vegetable tanning.・・・
The old English Tannery, with the help of an archivist and a Russian translator, researched all known descriptions of the process. Having experimented with this information for over two years, they finally re-produced the leather that is the old Russian leather, although produced in England.・・・
This fascinating material includes some interesting features. The slow vegetable tannage (4 months in pits without chemicals), with an infusion of willow and oak bark liquors, produces a leather with a strong durable fibre structure and good breathability. After tanning, the leather is dressed with birch oil, which acts as a preservative, and provides some water repellency, giving it its distinctive aroma.・・・
